I am moving into a new house right now
travelers insurance cut my home insurance for my old house
Is it required for me to have home insurance for the old house?
I live in PA
If you own it, it might not be a requirement, but it’s a darn good idea to have it! If you don’t own it, no. That is the responsibility of the new owner and/or renter.
If you own it Yes! I recomend you Get your own insurance separately from your loan company the one they offer is more expensive then you going out and getting one from an Insurance Company! and you will always need insurance on a loan.!! ALWAYS no way around it. 2nd if you are living in a home and you dont own it. You will only need renters insurance which covers only your personal belongings. If you are renting out your property then you need; depending on the state you live in. But normally it’s only fire Insurance no Personal Belongings.
No, there is no LAW that requires you to carry insurance on a house. If you own the house free and clear, feel free to let it sit there uninsured.
if you have a mortgage, your mortgage requires you to insure the house. If you don’t insure it, the mortgage company will insure their part of it, and bill you about 5x what it would cost you to insure it. If you don’t pay, they’ll foreclose.
if you have another interested party (Loan, mortgagee, lienholder) you may be required to carry Minimum Hazard insurance.
Once your OLD carrier cuts this insurance, your LOAN company MAY GET a notice of REDUCED or Cancelled insurance… at that time, they may at that time or a point in the future but insurance on your behalf if they feel your insurance does not meet the loan companies MIN requirements of HAZARD insurance (Fire, Water, Lightning and sometimes FLOOD if your in an area designated as such)
“even if nothing happens” they can buy a policy on you “retro”
and bill you, normally 3x the going market rate..
If you do not have a 3rd party, and your home is not in an association of Homes that REQUIRES a min insurance, then you normally do not need to have anything…
You should carry at least carry “LIABILITY”, if someone should get hurt on your property if you do not care to cover the structure…
Contact your AGENT/Broker.. they should be able to direct you best
If you still have your old home, are your renting it out? If so, you need a rental dwelling policy. It is not required if you do not have a mortgage, but if it burns down or someone gets hurt, its a good policy to have.
Are you selling the old home? Is that why you do not want insurance on it? Or are you renting it? I do not understand why Travelers cut or cancelled your old homeowners insurance on your old home. I would call and ask them why they did that.
Home insurance covers lots of different things. I don’t understand all the fine print of my home policy, but my homeowners insurance agent is always helpful. Try calling your agent or a agent in your city. They should be able to help you.
If you have a mortgage, your lender undoubtedly requires insurance – but if the house isn’t owner occupied, you need to modify the coverage.

If you have a mortgage you must….if you don’t have a mortgage, you’d better have insurance. Does that even seem like appropriate risk really?
