Why do (home) insurance companies ask whether you have a dog?

home insurance
Gabe G asked:

Does this have to do with liability or security?
Please no guesses/rationalized answers.
Thanks to all particularly to Chetco and Roothy for providing the most complete answers from the insurer’s and insured’s perspectives, respectively.

    Liability
They use different rates to insure different breeds, according to their own bite-stats studies and former claims..
If your company doesn’t do a home inspection, it is safest to always call your dog a medium sized mixed breed, because they have no stats on that, to make a quote..

Liability. Some companies won’t insure you or will give you a high premium if you have a certain breed. If your dog bites someone on your property you are liable.

Because of liablity issues. Some dogs are considered more threatening than others and for that reason certain insurance companies will not approve you. In fact one dog in particular is a pitbull, in the state of Fl insurance companies deny you if they know you have one.

The bad breeds are more susceptible to biting people which would mean that your home insurance could.
The insurance could go up quite bit or the bad breeds are more susceptible to pay never tell your home insurance what.

With certain breeds of dog insurance companies will not issue insurance or may drop you. This is breedism and should be illegal but it is done all over. The legality issue may be locally related as in a state issue here in the USA therefore one area may differ from another but many areas have insurance companies dropping homes with dogs they deem uninsurable. The real problem is when the issue is looked at more closely as bite and liability stats do NOT match what the insurance companies are doing. Insurance companies are not looking at the correct data but at society’s currently aggravated anxiety.
