How can I get home owners insurance quotes before I buy a home?

Can you buy your own home insurance instead of the bank get it for you?

if you are in the process of buying a home they require that so can you find your own insurance or you have to take the one they offer for the first year? it seem too much for the premium for the year they want to charge me. any advice
